HAYLING TO HOLLAND CHARITY CYCLE RIDE

RIDE 2012 - Sunday 8th to Saturday 14th July 2012

The Hayling Cycle Ride annual event, now in its historic 27th year, has established a substantial track record, both in the world of cycling and that of charitable fundraising. It combines the challenges of cycling over five days and that of raising at least £150 for the charity of your choice. Over £1.3m has been raised through the event for over 500 charities.

Number of Riders: 120

Following last year's successful ride to Le Mans, when we rediscovered that 'small is beautiful', we have decided to limit the number of riders to 120. We have now decided upon the shape of this year's Ride, the 27th year and first ride of a 'new era', with a new, compact committee, but the same dedication to detail in the organisation of the event!

The Main Ride - Outline

As with last year, the rider will have the choice of longer and shorter routes on some of the days. We arrive in Holland on Monday morning, 9th July, having travelled overnight on the ferry

Day 1 Hook to Haarlem (50 miles)

The route follows the North Sea cycle path, with beautiful sandy beaches and through a nature reserve. Haarlem is the capital of the province of North Holland, the city is located on the River Spaarne and has been the historical centre of the tulip bulb growing district for centuries.

Day 2 Haarlem to Amsterdam (70 miles/25 miles)

The longer route takes you to Heemskerk, then over to the pretty town of Edam (cheese), then to Volendam, where you catch the ferry to Marken. Then cycle along the sea dyke to Ijplein and into Amsterdam. The shorter route is a direct cycle path to Amsterdam for those that wish to spend longer in the Capital.

Day 3 Amsterdam to Amersfoort (80+ miles/40 miles)

The longer route will visit forest land and may even include a hill or two! For those choosing the shorter route, you will follow canals and a pretty ride into the beautiful medieval town of Amersfoort.

Day 4 Amersfoort to Dordrecht via Utrecht (70 miles)

Cycling through woodland and passing windmills. Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland having been granted city rights in 1220. The city is home to over 950 monuments.

We plan to have a gala dinner in Dordrecht on our last night in Holland

Day 5 Dordrecht to Hook (75 miles/60 miles) The day after the night before!

The longer route will visit Delft, one of the prettiest cities in Holland and best known for the blue and white porcelain and pottery. Delft is home to the Dutch Royal family and is where William of Orange was killed and buried in 1584.

The shorter route will take you on a lovely route directly back to the ferry, passing the giant sluice, you'll see the Maeslandkering - the enormous automatic storm-surge barriers that help protect the whole of south Holland from flooding and which are the largest moveable structures on Earth! You should have time to stop and have a look round.

We look forward to cycling with you in 2012!

In order that the organisers can make the exact bookings (hotels, ferries and support) it would be appreciated if you could complete the online entry form and also pay the deposit of £200 online (this includes any £100 booking/reservation fee), by no later than the 29th February 2012. The full entry fee of £450 must be paid no later than 30th April 2012. Due to pressure on numbers, a place cannot continue to be reserved without the entry form and a deposit of £200. Standing order forms are available on request, to facilitate stage payments.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  1. All participants in this event do so at their own risk and accept that the organisers have no legal liability in any regard. It is a condition of entry that riders will wear a helmet whilst cycling.
  2. The money raised by this event is distributed to charitable causes nominated by the organising committee and individual riders. Whilst every effort is made to comply with rider requests, we cannot guarantee that every nomination will receive a donation, although 100% of personal sponsorship money raised is distributed to charitable causes. Donations made to charities will reflect the fund-raising efforts of individual participants.
  3. All participants hereby agree to pay promptly all monies raised, will use their best endeavours to raise a sum in excess of £150 and will inform the organisers of the amount collected, in the event of the money being sent directly to their chosen charity, the name of which shall also be confirmed, once sent.
  4. In the event of any participant cancelling, refunds will only be made on a discretionary basis, dependent on such costs as have been incurred by the organisers.
  5. One of the new E111 DSS travel cards (EHIC) must be obtained and carried with you on the Ride, together with your personal insurance documents. Public liability insurance only is carried by the organisers.
  6. Personal travel insurance requirements must be dealt with on an individual basis. By accepting the terms and conditions for the ride you agree to take out this insurance.
  7. The event is not a race and, although trophies are awarded, our basic philosophy is to help others, whilst having fun. Riders are assisted by a number of support vehicles and are encouraged to ride at their own comfortable pace.
  8. Organisers have the discretion to refuse entry. This particularly refers to item 5 above.
  9. The organisers reserve the right to impose a surcharge of up to £20, should unforeseen costs arise.
  10. The organisers may require a copy of your passport to assist when leaving and entering the UK and/or The Netherlands.
  11. Hotel room mini-bars should be locked, but, if used, the cost will be individually recovered during the Ride, as will hotel telephone bills.
  12. A limited range of bike spares can be purchased, at cost, from support vehicles where available.
  13. High energy drinks, sweets, cakes, bananas and other sustenance and also basic medical supplies will be provided by support where available.
  14. Whilst recommended way and lunch stops are recommended, it is for each rider to decide where they choose to stop. Some riders prefer to stop more frequently than others, so please think about this carefully each day during the trip.
