Charity Evening at the Newtown

Charity Evening at the Newtown

Added: Wed 22nd Apr 2009
The annual Charity Cheque Presentation Evening took place in the rather more intimate surroundings of the Newtown’s new function suite on Friday, 3rd April, rather than at Seacourt, the location for the last several years. Nearly all of the 200 riders participating in last year’s ‘Tour de Tours’ Ride had collected their sponsorship by this date, with only one remaining on the ‘naughty list’, according to Charities Liaison committee member, Kerry West. The trend is now for riders to send their sponsorship directly to their favoured charity, often via the ‘Justgiving’ fundraising website, rather than via the Bike Ride’s charitable arm, known as ACE (Association for Charitable Endeavours). In fact, of the £94,068 (including Gift Aid) recorded as having been raised from Ride 2008, £64,575 was sent direct, which is more than double the proportion of a few years back. This means that the total raised through the event over the 23 years of the Paris to Hayling now exceeds £1,100,000! 15 riders raised more than £1,000, with Vodafone’s Team raising over £15,000 and Team Ditcham Park over £12,000. Barrie Dawson was once again Top Fundraiser with £4,000, earning the Paul Fisher Scroll of Honour Award, for the third time.

There was a good audience of the mainly local beneficiaries of donations on the night, with over £13,500 being handed out and more than 50 in attendance, including riders and support crew. There was also a very popular showing of this year’s ride video and photos, with contributions from Roger Key and Dave Hersee. After the presentations, there was a light buffet and the chance for the charities to ‘network’, as well as meet riders and support.

CHANNEL TO CHANNEL RIDE

The 10th Channel To Channel will take place on the week-end of the 16th and 17th May. We will again be starting from Weston-Super-Mare, with our new route through the Somerset Levels. As usual we will overnight in Salisbury before returning to Hayling. This event offers a great opportunity for some practice before our big event in July or can be enjoyed as an alternative ride for those unable to join us in France. Anyone interested in entering should contact Paris to Hayling President Pete McQuade on 07825 363 076 (mcquadep@aol.com), as there may still be places available.

ENTRIES FOR 2009

Due to the high demand for participation in the ride these days, we designed the new entry form early and made it available as a download from our website. However, we only have just under 150 entries, well below last year’s numbers at this time and so there are still places on both the longer and shorter rides – are we also suffering from the ‘credit crunch’?. If you want to be with us, please get your entry form in.
