Newbury & West Isley

A 30 Mile Ride in West Berkshire

First some general notes. The figures in brackets are approx. mileage from Speen Court in Newbury to key turnings or landmarks so that you can gauge distances before you start looking for the next turning. Some of the narrow country lanes need care due to unsound surfaces. Please beware of debris, mud or holes, especially if you are riding in a group and cannot see clearly ahead. Please also note that the numbers on the map above are an irrelevance and are simply there as a guide for the author (In other words, Codge didn't know how to remove them).

From the western exit of Speen Court, turn right onto the Old Bath Road. Turn left (0.3) in Speen Lane and stay on this road to the end when the road joins the A4. Turn left onto the A4 (1.0) and stay on this road across the two roundabouts (crossing the A34) and continuing along the A4 (Bath Road). Turn right into Hoe Benham Lane (3.9). Staying on this road bearing left then right until you come to the B4000.

Continue across the B400 (5.2) into High Street. Dog Leg, right then left (6.2) and continue on towards Westbrook. Turn Right into Winterbourne Road (6.5) then bear left onto local road (6.7). Stay on this road as it continues under the M4 and becomes Hangmans Stone Lane. Turn the second right (after the M4) (9.8).

Stay on this road as it heads for Brightwalton. Bear right along Honesty Bottom (11.7) and stay with this road until the T Junction (12.3) Turn right onto Long Lane and continue until you meet the B4494 (13.1).

Turn left onto the B4494 then turn right (13.2) into a local lane (there are two options here. Do not go down Sheep Leaze Lane). After approx' half a mile, this road becomes Catmore Road. Stay on this road until you get to a T junction (16.2). Turn right where you will find the Harrow immediately on your left (I hope).

Turn left out of the Harrow and continue along, as the road clearly becomes Fidlers Lane. Turn right (17.8) into Ball Pit Road. Now relax a little and stay on this road for the next 3.6 miles. Turn right (21.4) into Hailey Lane heading for Peasmore.

Turn left (22.8) into Field Road then almost immediately right (22.9) into Hillgreen Lane. Stay on Hillgreen lane as you pass the Fox & Hounds and continue along until you come to a T junction (24.3) with the B4494. Turn left and stay on the B4494 through Leckhampstead, Snelsomore and Donnington.

Continue along under the M4 and stay on the B4494 right through to Speen Court main entrance. By this time you should have completed 29.9 miles (ish).

Well Done.
