Buriton (Pub - The Fountain - Rowlands Castle)

This is a pretty ride, taking you out towards the South Downs and does include a long drag uphill, a very fast downhill and a steep climb. Pub stop is the Fountain Inn at Rowlands Castle .

First some general notes. The figures in brackets are approx. mileage from the Ship to key turnings or landmarks so that you can gauge distances before you start looking for the next turning. Some of the narrow country lanes need care, particularly as the weather has been bad recently. Please beware of debris or holes, especially if you are riding in a group and cannot see clearly ahead.

You will need all of your gears today!! This ride, although relatively short is a good introduction to hilly riding.

Turn right from the Ship car park and right (0.2) onto the Cycle Track and follow this to the car park where you bear left and turn left (1.0) onto East Street in Havant. Turn right and go up North St. towards the station. Turn right into Waterloo road then left at the end. Go straight across the level crossing and the give way and up New Lane to the end (2.3).

Turn right onto Bartons Road then immediately left into Wakefords way. After short climb turn right into Prospect Lane (2.9). Turn left at the T onto Whychers Gate Rd. (3.4). Go right at both mini roundabouts (3.9) then down Redhill road into Rowlands Castle. Go through the left hand arch of the railway bridge along Finchdean Rd. (4.6). At Deanlane End turn left (5.7) and go straight through Finchdean (6.1).

Just after passing the Saxon church at Idsworth turn right (7.0) (sign for Compton 4). At the end of this road after a 2-mile climb and a short downhill turn left (9.3) onto the B2146 and follow this road to South Harting (Beware, the drop into Harting is long and fast). Stay on the main road past the Ship pub then bear off left a few yards further on where the main road bends right (12.5). There is a sign for Nyewood and Rogate. Go past the village store then about a quarter of a mile further on turn left (12.8) towards West Harting.

At the next junction turn left (13.3) (sign Petersfield 4), then at the following triangular junction turn right (13.6) towards Rogate. At the next junction turn left (14.0) towards Goose Green. At the next junction turn left (14.7). At the end of this road turn right (15.2) onto the main road. After about half a mile turn left (15.7) towards Buriton. Follow this bendy road through the village and past the pond (17.7).

At the Master Robert pub turn left (17.9) (signposted Chalton & Finchdean). After climbing the steep hill this bendy road (approximately 3.2 miles), it eventually comes to a junction where you merge in with another lane coming down the hill from your right (21.1). Follow this road as it bends sharp left up and over the railway then bends right and on to Finchdean (23.2). Go straight through Finchdean and under the railway again at Deanlane End where you turn right (23.6) and on to Rowlands Castle. Pass under the railway and almost immediately as you approach the village green turn right to cross the main road onto the road that lies between the buildings and the Green. Make your way to The Fountain Inn - this is our lunch stop for the day. (24.7)

After lunch return to the main road head right and up the short hill to the double mini roundabout (25.5).

Turn left at both mini roundabouts towards Emsworth. Follow this road up the last hill of the day to its junction with Bartons Road where you turn right (26.8). Turn immediately left into Eastleigh Road (26.9). At the give way junction bear right onto Southleigh Road (27.4) and follow this road to the traffic lights at the end where you turn right (28.4). Follow the road back to the Havant Museum (28.7) and turn left back onto the Hayling Billy Cycle trail and retrace your steps south to the Ship at Langstone (29.7 approx).
