The Mardens (Pub - The Hare & Hounds - Stoughton)

A good early spring ride. It's not too flat, though neither is it too hilly. Pub stop is the Hare & Hounds Stoughton.

This is an early season ride. It is not hard but it is challenging for those who are still getting their fitness back. There are some undulations. Some roads will have loose gravel and possibly surface water. Be careful particularly going down hill or turning sharply.

Turn right out of the Ship car park and cycle up the track to the Museum in Havant where you turn right (1). Turn left at the traffic lights (1.4). Turn left at the bend in the road (2.3) and up Eastleigh Road

Turn right at T junction (2.9) and at the next junction turn right and immediately left (3) onto the Emsworth Common Road. Turn second left (4.3) signposted ‘Forestside’ and ‘Stanstead Park’. At the top of the climb turn left (6.7). After descending and rounding the long sweeping left hand bend (please be careful), take the right hand turn on the bend, sign posted ‘Finchdean’ (7.9).

Proceed under the railway bridge and through Finchdean, under another railway bridge and just after the church up on the side of the hill to your right, turn right, signposted ‘Compton and South Harting’ (9.3). Climb this undulating road and after the fast downhill turn right at the T junction opposite Littlegreen School (11.5). Follow this road through Compton and past West Marden for about 4 miles and then turn left signpost to ‘Stoughton’ (15.3).

Go past The Barley Mow and take the second left at the sign for Up Marden (15.7) and up a long gradual climb. This road does not have the best of surfaces in places so please be careful.

At the end of this road turn right signposted East Marden (19.4). At the next T junction turn right again. Following a short descent turn right at the hatched well (19.9) and follow this road along to the Hare and Hounds (22.5). This is our lunch stop.

After lunch carry on this road to the T-junction and turn left (23.7). Carry on to the next T-junction where you turn right and then first left (25.3). Go through Westbourne and over the mini roundabout into Southleigh Road (27.1). Proceed straight over the next staggered junction towards Denvilles. After the level crossing turn left at the traffic lights (29.1) and then left at the Museum down the Billy Track and back to the Ship (31).
