Goodwood (Pub - The Fox Goes Free At Charlton)

A tasty little ride that takes you through some lovely wooded areas and up and down some interesting hills. Pub stop is the Fox Goes Free at Charlton.

Important Notes: The lunch stop is the Fox Goes Free and it is 25 miles into the ride - beware that there is a sharp hill climb directly after the lunch stop, so don't overdo it on the liquid refreshment! The ride takes in some reasonable hills: please be careful at the sharp left hand turn on the downhill towards Duncton - read your notes before you start the ride. Please take special care on the quieter roads that may be gravel-strewn. There is plenty of vision, so the route is quite safe provided you take care. Have fun - only one more serious practice ride before France now!

Leave the Ship and head towards Havant going straight across the roundabout and the following set of lights. Turn right at the far side of the old petrol station just before Macdonalds. Make your way through the shopping precinct past the Church and along the old road towards Emsworth. Follow this road straight through the traffic lights by the One Stop (1.4) straight over the roundabout and under the A27 By-Pass through towards Emsworth.

Follow the main road until the next turn on the left, Selangor Avenue, follow this road all the way round until the junction with the B2148,(3.0) Horndean Road, turn left and carry on under the railway and motorway bridges. Almost directly after you have passed from under the bridge make a right hand turn into New Brighton Road, be careful crossing this sometimes busy road.

At the end of New Brighton Road you come to a mini roundabout,(3.8) turn right at this roundabout towards Westbourne, carry on through Westbourne but as you leave Westbourne instead of bearing left and staying on the main road, turn right (at the keep left bollards) (4.8) into Whitechimney Row, Follow this road with lovely half timbered houses on your right, and bear left following the road in parallel with the busy A27 bye pass, climbing up and over the rise and sweeping down and left to the junction with Woodmancote lane.(5.8).

Turn right towards Woodmancote and follow this road through Woodmancote and on to the junction with Cheesemans Lane,(7.0) take a left and then almost immediately turn right across the road into West Ashling Road and on towards West Ashling. Follow this road until it sharply descends into the village and the Richmond Arms on your right (8.1)

Turn left into Watery Lane (8.2), just after you pass the Richmond Arms, bear left over the bridge then at the junction by Hallidays turn right towards Chichester (8.8) – careful this can be a busy road. Just round the bend turn left, past Lynch Farm House (8.9). Follow this bumpy twisting road to the next T Junction and turn left (10.4), sign to West Stoke and Lavant. Follow this road through West Stoke and at the junction in Lavant (opposite the church) turn right (12.4).

Go over the old railway bridge, post office on right, and take the next left (one-way street) (12.6). Go down this road and turn left at the junction (12.8), go over the bridge and just before the hill turn right (Ford Water Road) (12.9). Follow this road, alongside the Aerodrome/racetrack, and go straight over the roundabout (14.2) and keep on going until the next crossroads - sign posted Scullpture at Goodwood and Marriot Hotel - turn left here(14.8).

Follow this long road up the hill until you get to a cross roads, (17.5) turn right BUT BE VERY CAREFUL the junction is on a fast blind corner of a main road coming from the left. Follow this road all the way to the next junction (19.7) and turn left towards Duncton (sign Duncton 4). Go down the hill but BE CAREFUL, WE ARE GOING TO TURN SHARP LEFT HALFWAY DOWN THE HILL, SO START BRAKING WHEN YOU GET TO THE UPWALTHAM SIGN.

Take the next left turn after the Upwaltham sign, almost a 180 degrees turn towards Charlton, Singleton and East Dean (20.6).

Follow this pretty road though East Dean (22.8) bearing right by the village pond, and on towards Charlton and the Fox Goes Free – our pub stop (24.1).

When you leave the pub turn right then at the net left (signpost Goodwood 1) turn up this road and climb the hill. At the junction at the top of the hill (25.5) turn left down the main Goodwood hill, enjoy but be careful.

At the bottom of the hill, immediately before the flint stone gate houses, turn right towards Lavant (26.8). Follow this road through Lavant village, the road bears left after bridge and village green is on your right, and up to the mini roundabout (28.6).

Turn right and follow the main road through Lavant, past the church on the right, and on until just after the now defunct AMOC petrol station on the right, take the next left turn (29.4). Follow this road and turn right at the crossroads (29.9) signpost West Stoke and Funtington.

Go back through West Stoke and follow the road all the way until you get to the junction on the apex of a bend in the main road (32.2).

Turn right, follow this road through Funtington and on until you get to the right hand turn (triangular junction) to Westbourne (35.2).

Follow this road all the way, sweeping right into and through Westbourne and straight over the mini roundabout into Southleigh Road (36.8).

At the next Junction go straight over Horndean Rd. (Right/Left dogleg), staying on Southleigh Rd., toward Denvilles, go over the railway crossing and on to the traffic light junction with the main Havant road,(39.0) turn right and continue until you reach Havant.

Retrace your steps from earlier back to the Ship at Langstone (40.7).
