| First some general notes. The figures in brackets are approx. Mileage from the Ship to key turnings or landmarks so that you can gauge the distance you have ridden. Some of the narrow country lanes need care, particularly if the weather has been bad recently. Please beware of debris, mud or holes, especially if you are riding in a group and cannot see clearly ahead. Leave the Ship and head towards Havant going straight across the roundabout and the following set of lights. Turn right at the far side of the old petrol station just before MacDonald's. Make your way through the shopping precinct past the Church and along the old road towards Emsworth. Follow this road straight through the traffic lights by the One Stop (1.4) straight over the roundabout and under the A27 By-Pass through towards Emsworth. Follow the main road until the next turn on the left, Selangor Avenue, follow this road all the way round until the junction with the B2148 (3.0) Horndean Road, turn left and carry on under the railway and motorway bridges. Almost directly after you have passed from under the bridge make a right hand turn into New Brighton Road , be careful crossing this sometimes busy road. At the end of New Brighton Road you come to a mini roundabout,(3.8) turn right at this roundabout towards Westbourne, carry on through Westbourne but as you leave Westbourne instead of bearing left and staying on the main road, turn right (at the keep left bollards) (4.8) into Whitechimney Row. Follow this road with half timbered houses on your right, and bear left following the road in parallel with the busy A27 bye pass, climbing up and over the rise and sweeping down and left to the junction with Woodmancote lane (5.8). Turn right towards Woodmancote and follow this road through Woodmancote and on to the junction with Cheesemans Lane (7.0) take a left and then almost immediately turn right across the road into West Ashling Road and on towards West Ashling . Follow this road until it sharply descends into the village and on past the Richmond Arms on your right (8.1). Follow the road past the pond and at the T junction turn right. Follow this road until you come to a junction with a signpost island, (8.6) turn off right into Southbrook road. Follow this road to the T junction and turn left and up the hill, carry on to the end of West Ashling Road and back across Cheesemans Lane and on to Woodmancote. Go past the Woodmancote pub on the road out of the village, bearing to the right - do not turn left at the junction you came out of earlier, stay on this road, bearing to the right and up a small rise and on to the next junction. At the junction (12.0) turn left onto the B2147 and on into Westbourne. In Westbourne carry straight on past the Stagshead Pub (13.0). At the roundabout take the first exit (13.5). Carry on down New Brighton Road and at the junction turn left under the railway bridge (14). Continue to the next roundabout and past the Railway pub on the left. At the roundabout proceed straight over into Emsworth town (14.5). At the square take the second right (first is no entry ) (14.6). Just a few yards along on the right is the Coal Exchange (14.7). This is our lunchtime stop. After lunch, go back the way you came to the roundabout and turn left on to the A27. Continue all the way along this road in the cycle lane (take care to avoid a Willis facial). Turn right just before the end of speed limit signs, across the road, down the cycle track and under the bridge. Turn right towards the traffic lights, head towards Havant and turn left at the museum, following the Billy Cycle Track to the Ship (17). |
