| Today's ride is some 40 miles, and the lunch stop is almost exactly halfway into the ride, so don't overdo the refreshments etc in the pub. There are no hills on today's ride but pace yourself and leave enough energy for the return journey. Please read your notes thoroughly this week, as the route is not obvious in places. Leave the Ship and head towards Havant going straight across the roundabout and the following set of lights. Turn right just before McDonalds (1.0). Make your way through the shopping precinct and out onto the old Emsworth road. Follow this road to the traffic lights where you turn left onto Southleigh road (1.7). Follow Southleigh Road across the level crossing, and along towards Westbourne across the right left dogleg give way junction (3.3) and straight on over the mini roundabout (3.8). In Westbourne stay on the main road as it bears right in the village centre (4.2) then turn sharp right about 150 yards further on (Whitechimney Row) towards Southbourne (4.3). Stay on this bendy road until you get to a T junction in Woodmancote where you turn right (5.6). When you get to the T junction at Cheesmans lane turn left then immediately right towards West Ashling (6.8). Just after passing the 30mph speed limit signs turn right (7.5) into Newells Lane and follow this road all the way to the main A259 where you turn left (8.8). At the large roundabout turn left onto B2146 (9.5). At the T junction with Clay Lane turn right (10.3). A short way along turn left into Moutheys Lane (10.6) opposite a converted barn. Go straight over the give way junction into Lye Lane (11.4) then at the end turn right (12.2) into West Stoke. Stay on this road all the way to the main road at Lavant (14). Turn left towards Midhurst then about 100yds along turn right into St. Nicholas Rd. bearing left as you enter it. Follow it round to the right until Springfield Close where you turn right (14.2) and then turn right again into Church Mead Close (14.3). The access to the cycle track is in a car park along on the left (sign for access to Centurion Way). Join the cycle track to Chichester, which you stay on all the way to the end (17.1). When you get to the end you come out into a bus turning area with signs for South Coast Cycle Route. Go left here towards the city centre then straight across the mini roundabout (17.2) into Westgate. Go straight on round the large roundabout (17.6) into West St. and past the Cathedral. Go straight on again where cars are forced left (17.8) and go straight on through the pedestrian precinct. Straight on past the big pillared building (Next store) on your right until you come to a junction with the Chichester Observer offices opposite (18). You now have to go round a small one-way system. Go down St. Pancras to the left of the Chichester Observer then turn right into Needlemakers (18.1) (sign for Selsey). Take the left turn (18.2) signposted Bognor and Selsey. Bear off left into Oving Road where the main road bends right next to the Four Chestnuts pub (18.4). Go straight across the mini roundabout (18.7) and again at the traffic lights (19) across the bypass and onto the B2144 to Oving. Turn right at the nursery (19.7) still on B2144 (yellow sign for Oving Place). Turn left just before the level crossing (20.1). When you reach Oving turn left into Gribble lane (20.8) and the Gribble Inn is 50yds along on the right - this is our lunch stop. To get to the car park and garden go just past the pub and round the back (20.9). After lunch, go back the way you came as far as the small one-way system in Chichester (23.6). Go straight on back through the pedestrian precinct past the Cathedral and back to the bottom of the cycle track (24.7). Join the cycle track towards Lavant and stay on it until you get to a junction (26.8) near some metal sculptures with signs for West Stoke 2 and East Ashling 3. Turn left here and go left where the path meets the road (26.9). About a mile on turn right towards West Stoke (27.7) then at the next junction turn left (28.8) towards West Stoke. In West Stoke turn left into Lye Lane about 100yds past the telephone box (29.2). Go straight across the give way junction into Mouthey's lane (29.9) then turn right at the T-junction at Double Barn (30.8). You are now back on our old favourite South Coast Cycle Route. Follow the SCCR left into Southbrook road (31.5) then left again (32) to Hambrook. Stay on the SCCR turning left at Cheesemans Lane then immediately right onto West Ashling road (32.9) and on through Woodmancote turning left at South Lane (34.1). Turn left again over the bypass towards Southbourne (34.6). Turn right at the main road mini roundabout (35.6) then follow this road through Emsworth back to Havant and down to the Ship (40 miles approx.) |
