Parts of this ride were loved by Meryl, hopefully you will see why as you follow the route. Turn right out of the Ship car park and cycle up the track to the Museum in Havant where you turn right (1). Turn left at the traffic lights (1.4). Turn left at the bend in the road (2.3) and up Eastleigh Road. Turn right at T junction (2.9) and at the next junction turn right and immediately left (3) onto the Emsworth Common Road. Turn second left (4.3) signposted ‘Forestside’ and ‘Stanstead Park’. At the top of the climb turn left (6.7). After descending and rounding the long sweeping left hand bend (please be careful), take the right hand turn on the bend, sign posted ‘Finchdean’ (7.9). Proceed under the railway bridge and through Finchdean, under another railway bridge and just after the church up on the side of the hill to your right, turn right, signposted ‘Compton and South Harting’ (9.3). Climb this undulating road and after the fast downhill turn right at the T junction opposite Littlegreen School (11.5). Follow this road through Compton and past West Marden, after passing the turn off to Walderton (15.3) about half a mile down the road there is a turn to the left up a short hill (16.1). Follow this road to the T-junction and turn left(17.4). Go through Funtingdon and, just round the bend, turn left, past Lynch Farm House (17.8). Follow this bumpy twisting road to the next T Junction and turn left (19.2), sign to West Stoke and Lavant. Follow this road through West Stoke and at the junction in Lavant (opposite the church) turn right (21.2). Go over the old railway bridge and turn left down the one way road and at the junction turn left over the river. Turn right down Fordwater Road and follow this road which bears left past the Goodwood aerodrome. Go straight over the roundabout and a couple of hundred yards further on turn left (23.6) signpost to Sculptures. Cycle past the Country Club entrance and take the second turn on the right towards Halneker (24.1). At the junction with the A285 go straight across and bear right down The Street (25.1). Follow this road but turn right into the old road (do not follow it round to the roundabout)(25.7) At the end of the road turn right and over the pedestrian bridge. Once over the bridge head west and past the filling station and take the next turn on the left, Tangmere Road (26). Follow the road until you get to the entrance to the Tangmere Aviation Museum. Go through the gate to the right and follow the path to the right and bear right onto the obvious track across the field. This track bears left then comes out at a gateway by a tarmac road (27.2ish). Turn right and follow the road that eventually bends left and approaches the Gribble Inn from ‘behind’ (27.6). This is our lunch time stop, and, all being well there should be a BBQ ready for us. Once fully refreshed the route home awaits us. Out of the pub turn left and at the top of the road turn right. At the next junction turn left, over the railway crossing. At the roundabout (28.9), take the first exit, left turn, and a little way up the road turn right into Marsh Lane (29) sign South Coast Cycle Route. At the end of this road turn right (30.3). At the Walnut Tree pub roundabout (30.5) go straight across the roundabout and carry on to the next roundabout (31.4) and take the first (left) exit. Follow the road through Hunston and beyond until you turn right up Green Lane (32.9) directly opposite a row of topped poplar trees, signpost Birdham. At the junction with the main Selsey Road bear right (33.2) and a short distance on, bear left, back off the main road down Wophams Lnae (33.4). At the next junction turn right (33.9) and follow the main road for a mile until you turn left at Dell Quay Road (34.9). Take the next turn to the right, signposted Bosham, Fishbourne, and keep on this road till you get to the junction with the old A27 (36.3) and turn right. Follow the road all the way back through Fishbourne, Bosham, Nutbourne, Southbourne and Emsworth. Go under the by-pass at the end of the Havant Road and make your way back to the Havant Museum and down the Billy Cycle Track and back to The Ship (45ish). |
