Reunion Ride (Pub - The Royal Oak - Hooksway)

A pleasant ride to this lovely spot, with a big garden. A chance to meet again.

Today's scenic (another word for hill) ride visits one of the remotest pubs in the area. The Royal Oak at Hooksway is tucked away down a cul-de-sac in the downs and is mostly visited by walkers and mountain bikers. Leave the Ship and head towards Havant, taking the Langstone Billy Trail to Havant, turning right after the Museum exit, towards Emsworth.

Go straight over the Emsworth roundabout (3.2) and on through Southbourne. Just after the sign for Nutbourne turn left (4.9) into Inlands Rd. (sign for Loveders Campsite). Follow this road to the T junction at Broad Road where you turn left (6.2). Up over the bypass then turn right into W. Ashling Road (6.6). Just after the Richmond Arms turn left into Watery Lane (7.8) and then left again at Funtington (8.5).

A short way along the main road (8.7) turn right onto B2146 towards Hurting. Follow Hares Lane to the T junction where you turn right (10.1) towards Walderton. At the next junction turn right (10.9) towards N, E & Up Marden. Follow this road on through Stoughton and on to East Marden and its Thatched Well in a three way junction (14.8).

Turn right at the well towards Chilgrove and climb hill to main road where you turn left (15.5). After a bit over half a mile turn right at the sign for Hooksway (16.3). There is a short steep downhill and The Royal Oak is on the left at the bottom of the hill (16.8).

To get home, go back up the short steep hill and turn right (17.1). After about quarter of a mile turn left (17.3) into North Marden. Follow bendy road down hill then turn right towards Compton & Up Marden (18.1) (Easily missed turning if going fast down hill!!). Near the top of the next hill turn left (18.7) towards Up Marden.

Follow this bendy road through Up Marden then long downhill to a T junction where you turn right for Walderton (21.8). Turn left at the main road towards Westbourne (22.3) and continue until the give way at the main Funtington road (23.9). Turn right and follow this road to the main road T junction at the end.

Turn right then immediately left at the main road T-Junction into Bartons Road. 100 yards into Bartons road turn, left into Eastleigh road, opposite the BUPA hospital. Turn right at the T junction into Southleigh Road then on across the railway crossing and right at the T junction next to One Stop. Follow this road towards Havant, taking the Billy Trail to the Ship.
