Walderton - The Barley Mow

First decent hill of the new season Pub stop Barley Mow Walderton SPECIAL EVENT - BOWLING ALLEY

A couple of points to remember- this is an early season ride. It is not flat but it is not hard; there is one demanding hill. Please ride at your own pace and stop if you need to. Most of the ride covers roads with little traffic. Some roads will have loose grit or surface water, so be very careful especially down hill or turning sharply – apply brakes evenly and keep your distance from riders in front. As always please keep your wits about you. Secondly – don’t rush. Remember the pub will not be open until noon. Finally, the homeward leg is slightly shorter, so take your time to relax at lunch.

Leave the Ship and head towards Havant. Turn right down the Hayling Billy cycle track, when you get to the car park area bear left up the hill and turn right onto the old road towards Emsworth. Follow this road straight to the traffic lights by the One Stop (1.4)

Turn left and follow the road round to the junction with Horndean road (2.9) Go across this junction and follow the road to Hollybank Lane where you turn left. (3.2) Go to the top of this hill and bear right into Long Copse Lane follow this lane all the way to the next T Junction (4.2).

Turn left up Monks Hill road and at the T junction (4.8) turn right. Take the next junction left to forestside and follow road down hill bearing left (careful of loose gravel). Follow the road up past the first entrance to Stanstead on your right (5.5). Then past the sawmill on the left. Now climb the long long hill to the next T Junction (7.3).

Turn left and follow the road and down the hill until at the sharp left hand bend, WARNING please be careful just after the Dean Lane End sign. Take the right hand turn (8.6) under the railway bridge to Finchdean.

Go through Finchdean, keeping to the right and on and under the next railway bridge (9.2) WARNING - the road surface is generally not all it could be under this bridge. Carry on up this road and just after the Saxon Church on the right (up in the field) at the next junction turn right (9.9). WARNING - Be careful on this turn as cars sometimes come down the road at great speeds. Climb the short hill and follow this undulating road all the way to the next T junction (12.2) opposite Little Green School.

Turn right and follow the road, through Compton and on through West Marden (sign 13.5) and on towards Walderton. After a series of right and left hand bends, and just after Cooks Lane, (Walderton sign 15.9) , turn left (16.1) - sign to Stoughton and Up Marden – and towards Walderton village the Barley Mow – our lunch time stop is on your left (16.3).

Having taken refreshment, come out of the pub and turn right. At the end of the road turn left back onto the B2146. Follow this road for just under two miles and at the junction at the top of the hill turn right (18.8) almost immediately turn left towards Westbourne, follow this road for about a mile all the way down to Westbourne.

Go through Westbourne and straight over the mini roundabout into Southleigh Road (19.9). At the next Junction go straight over Horndean Rd (right and then left dogleg) staying on Southleigh Rd toward Denvilles.

Go over the railway crossing and on to the traffic light junction with the main Havant Road (21.9) turn right and continue until you reach Havant. Turn right at Havant Museum (22.4). Retrace your steps from earlier back to the Ship at Langstone (24).
