Selbourne

A very challenging alternative to the Round The Harbours ride

Leave the Ship and head towards Havant on the Hayling Billy trail. At the car park (1) bear right under the bridge to continue up the trail. At the end turn right (1.3) over the railway crossing then straight on over the junction onto New Lane. At the end (2.3) turn right then first left into Wakefords Way. At the top of the hill turn right (3) into Prospect Lane. At the T junction turn left (3.5) then turn right at both mini roundabouts into Redhill Rd to Rowlands Castle. Pass the green & under the bridge past the Castle Inn (4.7).

At Deanlane End turn left (5.7) under the railway bridge to Finchdean. Go straight on past The George (6.2). Follow this road until it bends sharp left up over the railway (8). Take the right fork (8.1)(low bridge 3 miles sign). Beware steep downhill into Buriton then at the crossroads go straight on (11.4) at the Master Robert. Follow this bendy road to its end and turn right (12.5). Straight on at mini roundabouts (13 & 13.4) then turn right (13.5) onto B2146 Sth Harting. Fork off left (13.7) onto Heath Rd West. Turn right (13.9) at T junct (lake on right) then at give way (14.4) turn left into Pulens Lane.

At the give way at the old A3 (15) go straight over onto Inmans Lane. Follow this bendy road through Street village, under the railway then begin to climb (16.5). At the top of the hill turn right (16.9) (sign Wheatham & Oakshot). After short very sharp climb turn right (17.1) (sign West Liss & Hawkley). Turn left at T junct (18) to Hawkley. Road climbs steeply round a hairpin (18.8). Carry on past 2 junctions then turn right (19.5) then bear left (19.6)(signs Empshott). Beware bad road surface in dip (20.1). After another short uphill (20.6) go straight on (sign Selborne). At T junct (21.1) go left (sign Selborne & Alton).

In Selborne The Queens Hotel on the right (22.5) is the lunch stop. After lunch rejoin the main road and continue in the same direction for a short way then turn left (22.6) into Gracious St. (sign Newton Valence). After another long climb turn left at T junct (24.4) to Newton V. In Newton Valence (24.9) bear right (sign Selborne). After steep downhill go right then left at give way (25.4) (sign Hawkley 2). Go straight on past the Hawkley village sign and the next junction (27.4). Turn right at next junct (27.8) (sign village centre).

At the next give way (28.2) bear left towards Oakshott. Turn left (28.6) (sign Oakshott & Wheatham). Beware loose gravel in dip (29.3). Turn right (30.3) then bear right (30.5) towards Steep. Turn right at T junct (31.9) then straight on at give way (32.1) on Ridge Common Lane. Go right onto A272 (33.3) towards Langrish.

Turn left (33.6) at Seven Stars into Ramsdean Rd. In Ramsdean go left at the fork (35) then turn right (35.1 No sign). At T junct turn right (35.4) (again no signs). Bear left (36.2) (sign east Meon). Go right (36.4) then at the T junct turn left (36.9) (sign Clanfield & Horndean). Follow this road up over and down into Clanfield then turn left (39.9) (Sign Chalton & Petersfield). Turn off left (40) into Petersfield Rd.

Turn right (41.2) at T junct at Hogs Lodge, left at mini roundabout (41.4) over the A3. Left again (41.7) (sign Chalton 1) & follow this road through Chalton past the Red Lion and on to Finchdean. In Finchdean turn right at the George (45.4). You now retrace the way you came out this morning back to the Ship as follows. Follow this road to Deanlane End, under the railway bridge then turn right (45.9) to Rowlands Castle.

Stay on this road through Rowlands Castle keeping left of the village green then on up to the mini roundabouts. Take first exit at both (47.8). Take the second right into Prospect Lane (48.2). At the end turn left into Wakefords Way. At the end of this road turn right then first left into New Lane. Follow New lane to its end then straight over the railway crossing them immediately left through the railway gates and onto the Billy Trail. Follow this to the end, through the car park and again on to the end of the next section out onto Langstone Road. Turn left and the Ship is a few hundred yards down the road on the left (approx 52 miles).

SELBOURNE – An alterative (less demanding) route.
Pub – The Queens Hotel - Selbourne
Go over the roundabouts and go through Petersfield and out the other side into the one-way system. Bear right then bear left on the old London road, past Churchers College and straight over the roundabout. Follow the road for a couple of miles then turn left on the B3006 to Liss.
This road is a long downhill run to the Whistlestop pub, turn left at the mini roundabout and over the railway crossing. At the T-junction opposite the Bluebell pub turn right. Go carefully straight over the roundabout that crosses the A3M and stay on this road all the way to Selbourne.
In Selborne The Queens Hotel on the right is the lunch stop.
After lunch rejoin the main road and go back the way you came, but this time as you leave the village, turn right (sign Newton Valence) up the hill. Follow this road until you come to a left turning signposted Hawkey 2 miles. This long undulating twisting road has some very rough patches so be careful. Stay on the road through Hawkey and follow signs to Liss, eventually you will cross a bridge over the motorway and come to a road junction (The Spread Eagle pub is on the left). Turn right at the junction and at the roundabout turn left towards Petersfield. Turn left and follow the cycle signs to Petersfield. Take the cycle track along side the motorway and follow the cycle signs until you get to the roundabout on the A272 bear left back onto the old London road, follow the signs to Uppark, turning right into Pulens Lane. Stay on Pulens Lane and carry on as it becomes Heath Road East. At the end of this road, at the T Junction turn left onto the B2146. Follow this road till the right turn signposted Buriton. Turn right up this road and follow it to Buriton. Go into Buriton and turn left up Kiln Lane (opposite the Master Robert). This is Buriton Hill that you came down this morning. Climb this demanding hill and retrace the route you took this morning back to The Ship.
