Pagham

This ride is an alternative to the week-end Salisbury ride. The ride takes us to Pagham Football Club where, at 14:00, there will be a charity football match between an Avisford veterans XI and an Ex Saints XI, so come and watch the stars of yesterday play football again. There is a bar in the ground and an entrance fee of £3.00. All proceeds go to charity. As it is a 30 mile route to the ground, a departure time of 11:00 from The Ship should give you time to arrive before kick off.

Turn right out of the Ship car park and cycle up the track to the Museum in Havant where you turn right (1). Turn left at the traffic lights (1.4). Turn left at the bend in the road (2.3) and up Eastleigh Road. Turn right at T junction (2.9) and at the next junction turn right and immediately left (3) onto the Emsworth Common Road. Turn second left (4.3) signposted ‘Forestside’ and ‘Stanstead Park’. At the top of the climb turn left (6.7). After descending and rounding the long sweeping left hand bend (please be careful), take the right hand turn on the bend, sign posted ‘Finchdean’ (7.9).
Proceed under the railway bridge and through Finchdean, under another railway bridge and just after the church up on the side of the hill to your right, turn right, signposted ‘Compton and South Harting’ (9.3). Climb this undulating road and after the fast downhill turn right at the T junction opposite Littlegreen School (11.5).
Follow this road through Compton and past West Marden, after passing the turn off to Walderton (15.3) about half a mile down the road there is a turn to the left up a short hill (16.1). Follow this road to the T-junction and turn left(17.4).
Go through Funtingdon and, just round the bend, turn left, past Lynch Farm House (17.8). Follow this bumpy twisting road to the next T Junction and turn left (19.2), sign to West Stoke and Lavant. Follow this road through West Stoke and at the junction in Lavant (opposite the church) turn right (21.2).
Stay on this road, straight over the mini roundabout till you get to the major roundabout, just past the Chichester Theatre, and take the first exit to the left (23.4).

At the next roundabout take the first exit (effectively straight on) (23.5) and up past St Richards Hospital, over the next mini-roundabout and on to the mini roundabout junction (24) - Cathedral Garage on your right - turn left at this junction, then, almost immediately, turn right at the mini-roundabout.
Follow this road across the Oving Road (24.4) and at the junction with Bognor Road turn left (24.7). Follow this road to the major roundabout, depending on how busy it is, take the third exit on this roundabout, signpost to Pagham Mundam Runcton, alternatively, go over the pedestrian bridge which you will see, across the road to your right.
Stay on this road till you get to the Walnut Tree pub and turn left (26.1). Continue along this road for about three miles and just after The Inglenook restaurant (29.1) on your right and the row of shops on your left, turn left up Nyetimber lane.
There is a pub called The Lion on your left, so if you don't want to watch the football match this is a good lunch stop. To get to the match (there is a bar) carry on down the road, the entrance to the ground is directly opposite the Pagham Parish Church centre - it will cost £3.00 to get in. (29.3)
To get home go back the way you came to the end of Nyetimber lane and turn right into Pagham Road (29.6). Follow the road all the way back to the Walnut Tree pub roundabout (32.6). Go straight across the roundabout and carry on to the next roundabout (33.4) and take the first (left) exit. Follow this road through Hunston and beyond until you turn right down Green Lane (34.9) - directly opposite a row of poplar trees, signpost Birdham.
At the junction with the main Selsey road bear right (35.2) and a short distance on bear left back off the main road down Wophams Lane (35.4). At the next junction turn right (35.9) and follow the main road for a mile until you turn left at Dell Quay Road (36.9). Take the next turn to the right, signposted Bosham Fishbourne, and keep on this road till you get to the junction with the old A27 (38.3) and turn right.
Follow the road all the way back through Fishbourne, Bosham, Nutbourne and Emsworth. Go under the by-pass at the end of the Havant road and make your way to the Havant Museum and down the Billy Cycle track and back to The Ship (47ish)
